Take a look at one of the earliest surviving buildings in Henfield. This cottage is a wonderful example of a traditional hall house, a style of building from the Middle Ages structured around a central hall. These timber framed houses originated in Sussex and Kent, and can be identified by the exposed wooden framework, steep roof and gablet – the triangular point on the roof where three sides meet. However, the striking feature on this cottage is the chimney which seems to defy gravity!
